Lowering your handlebars leaves some length of extra, unneeded steerer tube that extends above the handlebar stem. This can be dangerous in the event of an accident. It is technically possible to remove a steerer tube from your fork and fit a new one, but it requires specialized tools, and you risk damaging the fork if you get it wrong. Finally, you’ll want to use your metal file to work out any sharp edges which you don’t want to take out onto the road. Again, if cutting carbon fiber, go very gently. Can you make the extension longer than 18mm? In theory yes it is possible to make them longer, however, for safety reasons we have set the maximum height at 18mm. We suggest you have at least half of your stem clamping around your original steerer tube. Thankfully with spacers, you’ll have room for adjustment after you’ve cut the steerer tube, so there’s some room for fine-tuning as you go – provided you don’t cut too short. Extending a steerer tube is technically possible, but not as reliable or safe. Most cyclists – including us – would warn you against it. A correct cut is infinitely better. #2. Cutting The Steerer Tube You’ll cycle faster with a lower handlebar stem and a cut steerer tube, but leisure cyclists might not want to bother with a serious bike modification like cutting the steerer tube.

Brand

A bike steerer tube connects the stem and handlebars to the fork – and by extension the front wheel. When the handlebars are turned, the steerer tube moves to steer the front wheel. I've had this conversation in the past with a customer, and they ended up returning the "good deal" bike and bought a more appropriate and properly fitting bike from us. Expander is similar in concept to a compressor, but increases, rather than reduces, the dynamic range above the threshold level. As mentioned, the steerer tube is one part of the front fork as a whole, and the most straightforward way to get a longer steerer tube to work with is with an entirely new fork. Often when riders cut down their steerer tubes, it’s to increase performance by providing a more aerodynamic riding position. Normally I wear gloves+Knee pads... but also like to ride my bike, wearing only my helmet. And sometimes full armour (ocasionally).

Extender Headset

The OneUp is the most full-featured, lightest, and least expensive out of the three, with a wide assortment of Allen keys, a tire lever, chainring bolt, and the ability to adapt it to hold a spare CO2 or whatever you can fit in the tiny storage container. You do have to thread your steerer tube, though, which is a dealbreaker for some riders. OneUp was one of the first to the game, and their tool works great, but it would be nice to see a version that doesn't require a special stem or threaded steerer. If you have cut your fork steerer too short, got a new frame or bought a second hand fork we can fit a new steerer tube rather than buy a new CSU or fork. What does an expander plug do? If your second-hand bike’s steerer tube has come up short, use some of that money you saved buying second-hand to refit a new fork. The only thing I can imagine stanching something in the steer tube, it would be food, due to ease of access. So if you’re looking into extending that steerer tube, we humbly suggest you reassess and go for a new front fork, a high-rise stem, or a different bike.
