About this deal

The good news is that porous hair also absorbs moisturizing products well. A wide range of products, from leave-in conditioners to rich butters, can seal the holes and make your hair easier to manage. Whether you’re just beginning your natural hair journey or you’re ready to change up your wash routine, there’s always an opportunity to reevaluate how you’re taking care of your coils. When it comes to this curl type, it’s essential to pay close attention to how you’re washing, styling and protecting your strands. We reached out to Geneva Fowler, natural hair expert and lead braid stylist at BEAUTYBEEZ, a beauty bar in Los Angeles, to teach us how to care for coily hair. First, what is coily hair?

The tight coils are all dark brown with a touch of blond streaks. This adds a unique tone to your curls and makes them stand out more. Type 4C hair is very cottony with such tight coils that you usually can’t see the curl pattern with the naked eye. The strands are often very fine and delicate and have a very low lustre. The hair strands can shrink up to 70% or more when dry. How to care for coily hair Brown coils always look really elegant but they can also be boring for some people. You can use blond frosted tips to make your hair stand out. Most people with natural hair who try finger coils love them despite the cons, but you will have to decide that for yourself! Dos and Don’ts of Finger Coiling It all starts with the right hair care products. You could follow all the rest of our tips, but if you’re using the wrong product for your hair type, you’ll continue to do more damage. Starting with your first section, apply the pre-poo treatment to your hair, working it in from the roots to the ends and gently detangling as you go. Begin by wetting your hair with warm water. Be careful not to use hot water, as this can dry out your curls. Washing your hair too often can cause your scalp to overproduce oils, so dry shampoo is a boon for people with straight, oily hair.

We can’t explain coily hair without breaking down the identifying “ codes” that are often used within the curly hair community. Coily gals fall into the 4A to 4C category, whereas curls are 3A-3C and waves are 2A-2C. To get even more specific, 4A hair types have S-shaped, small spirals, while 4B and 4C hair have Z-shaped or zigzag patterns with sharper angles. 4C also tends to be the most fragile and tighter of the group. Your lovely coiled hair can also be pulled into space buns, which look adorable on just about anyone. If you are going somewhere casual, space buns are the way to go.

The tight coils can also be pulled to the front and draped over the head on the side. They sweep down and look like soft bangs coming onto the forehead. Curly hair and coily hair have their similarities and their differences, their pros, and cons, but it’s important to remember that just like those squabbling siblings, neither one is better than the other. Leave-in conditioner is the first step after washing your hair. Similar to your go-to shampoo and conditioner, your leave-in should be heavy in moisture. While applying leave-in conditioner, Fowler suggests detangling using your fingers or a wide-toothed comb. And remember to always start from the bottom and slowly work your way up to prevent more tangles and snags.

The shampooing step is non-negotiable if you want the best results. Below are some steps to take to properly cleanse your natural hair. The main difference is in the weight of the product you’re using. Coily hair loves heavy products with an oil base, such as argan or olive oil — all that voluminous hair just takes the oil in, making it look defined and incredible. If your hair is more on the curly side, you’ll want to avoid heavy oils like the plague, as they’ll make your poor tresses limp and weighed down. Finger coils can often last up to three weeks when the coils are created on clean, moisturized hair. It’s also important to refresh your coils with an oil and water mist periodically and protect your coils from frizz and dryness at night. Maintaining Finger Coils Jennifer Hudson was at the third annual “A Fine Romance” at Sony Studios in Culver City, Los Angeles, California on October 20, 2007. She wore a stunning purple off-shoulder dress to pair with her shoulder-length curly raven hairstyle with curly bangs. You can pile all your tight coils in an elegant bun on top of your head. This will be a sophisticated look for any event you can think of. Leave some strands out on the side so that they can frame your face. Not only will this make the finger coiling process easier, but it’ll ensure that the styling process goes off without a hitch. Below are all of the supplies you’ll need for your finger coils. Don’t pull on your scalp too tightly – excessive tugging and pulling when styling can lead to damage to your scalp and cause hair fallout. Be gentle!
