About this deal

When thrown at power lines, Cappy allows Mario to transform into a ball of electricity and ride along the line; this is a major mode of transportation within the game. Cappy also informs the player of various aspects of the game and of the surrounding world, such as the local currency that can only be used in that world. Mario can utilize Cappy in different ways, including throwing him to defeat enemies, jumping on Cappy as a platform. He can also collect coins for Mario when thrown. Cappy can possess various living and non-living objects throughout the game world. The ability is formally known as Capture. As well as the usual yellow coins, some of which you lose if Mario dies, each World also features 50 or 100 purple coins, unique to that world. In the Wooded Kingdom, for instance, they look similar to nuts, as in nuts and bolts rather than assorted nuts. Coins of both colours can be spent in shops, but purple coins buy World-specific items: themed outfits for Mario to wear and items to decorate the Odyssey. Mario can use these outfits to gain access to yet more Moons, but really these items add additional charm oto an already incredibly charming game. There are loads of fun minigames waiting for you to discover, with different games in each kingdom! Take aim at the top, set new records, and maybe even win some prizes…

The Cap Kingdom and Dark Side are the only kingdoms in Super Mario Odyssey to contain no 8-bit segments. Cappy is a magical creature who can take the form of other objects and beings. This simple notion allows Mario to transform into anything from an electrical current to a T-Rex. Super Mario Odyssey positions Mario’s hat as its own character. Yet, Cappy is a reflection of Mario’s legacy. This felt hat, no longer in production, is a potent symbol of an iconic videogame character.

The same effects of Mario's cap in Super Mario 64 hold true in Super Mario Sunshine but with the added effect of Mario gradually losing health due to the heat. The only enemies that steal Mario's cap in this game are Swipin' Stus. Cappy also informs the player of various details of the game and the surrounding world, such as regional coins that can only be used in one kingdom.

Seaside Kingdom

Don't let the abundant nature of the Wooded Kingdom fool you – it's a very technologically advanced place. In the group photo, after the player obtains 100% completion in the game, a restored or spare version of the Mario Cap is shown. Mario's cap can be equipped on a Mii Fighter in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It gets faster and faster with every hop, skip and jump!

Each creature you capture has its own moves, which usually come in handy for the ensuing section of the level. A frog can jump much higher than Mario can, for example, even though jumping is probably Mario’s key skill. A “Sherm” – a tank presumably named after the M4 Sherman – can destroy obstacles with its gun, with the help of motion-controlled aim assistance. A statuesque “Moe-Eye” can put on special sunglasses to see hidden platforms.

Princess Peach and Bowser are getting married?!

While in the Darker Side, he is shown to be grateful to Mario for his journey when they climb the replica of the New Donk City Hall to reach the last Multi Moon on its top. New Donk City is home to some of the world's leading companies, and is known for its soaring skyscrapers. Visitors should make time for the magnificent views of the city at night from the roof of the City Hall, known as the Million-Coin View. Just be warned that it's always crawling with tourists... Known as Steam Gardeners, they work tirelessly and can even repair themselves. No-one knows why they expend so much energy on the plants and flowers here, but they seem to enjoy it. In Pikmin Bloom, a Huge Seedling that grows into a Blue Pikmin wearing a Mario Cap is obtained when the player links the app to a Nintendo Account. In the original Super Mario 64, Mario also makes use of three different types of caps in addition to his regular cap: the Wing Cap (which enables him to fly), the Metal Cap (which enables him to walk underwater and through fire), and the Vanish Cap (which enables him to walk through certain walls).

An epic adventure full of surprises

Cappy is both friendly and helpful to Mario during his journey. Cappy is shown to be bold, as he is passionate about rescuing Tiara from Bowser. Contrarily, Cappy is shown to be slightly timid and easily startled at times. Cappy is also talkative, as he frequently provides Mario with advice and sometimes information relating to the current location.
