About this deal

If there’s a silver lining to the 5-Series’ performance, it’s that it only has 11ms of lag and has a game mode that will turn on automatically when you turn on a video game. Combined, these two features certainly help games feel more responsive – something we can attest to after playing several hours of intense UFC 3 matches on the 5-Series – but without HDMI 2.1 and/or 120Hz support, it’s really not a great fit for the Xbox Series X or PS5. Most 4K TVs are also loaded with smart features, which are great for when you want to take a break from games, or for when your roommates want to get in some Netflix-and-chill time. Features include support and functionality for streaming media services, voice search, or mirroring content from your phone or tablet. What is 4K?

The TCL weighs less and looks a little less bulky from behind. The IR receiver/LED indicator below the TV logo blinks to confirm remote control presses or flashes red when the TV encounters an issue, to name but two potential occurrences. The TCL 5-Series S535 uses Roku TV, an egalitarian smart TV platform that has a fair and robust search feature and most of the major streaming apps. It’s an altogether cooler, less punchy and colourful image, and while it’s probably more accurate than the Hisense Roku, it also strikes me as less inviting. Connectivity-wise, the TCL Roku boasts an extra HDMI input over the Hisense Roku, which is handy if you’re someone with plenty of sources. Connections tally at 4 x HDMI 2.0, 3.5mm audio out, CI+ slot, a DVB-T2/T UK tuner, USB, optical out and LAN. HDMI-CEC (or T-Link) only seems to cover soundbars.

That success spawned another Hisense Roku set, and now we have another with TCL re-establishing the partnership they have with Roku in the US with two new UK ranges. Is there a promotion on TCL 50C720K 50 Inch QLED 4K Ultra HD Smart TV in next week’s Costco leaflet?

The next generation is here. By which we mean next-gen consoles: the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. They're pretty much standard for serious gamers going forward. Which means it's time to also upgrade to a 4K TV. Why miss out on the stunning detail and fast response gameplay that 4K TVs offer? Similarly, upscaling isn’t wonderful, which isn’t surprising considering that the 5-Series uses TCL’s AIPQ processor that we largely found unsuccessful at upconversion on the TCL 6-Series. Making matters worse, its lower native refresh rate of 60Hz means motion processing isn’t nearly as good as the TCL 6-Series that’s just one step above it. Panasonic’s mid-range TVs have always rated very highly among the experts, though as recently as last year they were missing key tech for up-to-the-minute gaming. The Panasonic JX940 is a literal game-changer though, thanks to what it calls “Game Mode Extreme”. This adds 4K at 120Hz, VRR, and two HDMI 2.1 ports. That all combines with ALLM and AMD FreeSync Premium for an all-round smooth, lifelike gaming experience. To fit a number of entertainment centers, the 5-Series is available in four sizes: 50 inches, 55 inches, 65 inches and 75 inches. We were sent the 50-inch model for review, but outside of the number of dimming zones, the specs and features remain the same.Whites are crisply and purely defined, and with 4K SDR content – such as Netflix’s Sense8 – concerns about how punchy and vibrant the TV can be dissipate. Turn to a stream of The Crown on Netflix in Dolby Vision HDR, though, and those issues rear their head again. Complexions of the royal family take on a pallid tone, with the image less expressive. The same issues with SD upscaling I noticed with Hisense A7200G are present. It isn’t as poor as the Hisense, but it’s still noticeable how complexions can veer from detailed to waxy when switching between SD and HD signals of ITV’s Tipping Point. It's a clear upgrade on previous TCL TVs, with a QLED 4K screen — very strong for the budget range. The picture is boosted by Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and other HD formats, which optimises colour and contrast. You do have to bear in the mind, however, that it is ultimately a budget set. It's good but it doesn't compete with more expensive options. But at a fraction of the price, the difference is marginal in the grand scheme of things. Assembly is super simple and involves tightening two screws for each foot and inserting the power cable. Much like the Hisense Roku, you’ll reach the set-up screen within minutes of taking the TV out the box. There’s also wall-mounting support if that’s of interest, with the VESA wall-mount available separately. The slim-ish bezels are perfectly fine and in keeping with the fuss-free tone the TCL 55RP620K sets up. Interface

With DTS-HD on blu-ray discs and streaming platforms, movies have never sounded better! DTS Surround Sound is available on over 50,000 streaming titles worldwide.Lastly, the 5-Series does have Dolby Vision support and Dolby Atmos passthrough. The former allows the TV to access the highest quality content over streaming services, while the latter can pipe spatial audio to your soundbar without a dedicated streaming player. It’s also equipped with a “Game Optimiser” menu which allows you to tweak the brightness, contrast, VRR, and other features as you play. LG prides itself on the OLED gaming experience — fluid, responsive, and totally immersive. The all-glass screen isn’t ideal for daytime gaming or bright rooms. The reflection can really interfere with your gameplay. It’s worth considering if this is a deal breaker for you. In terms of off-axis viewing angles, you pretty much only want to watch this TV head-on. The 5-Series does a slightly better job retaining color saturation off-axis than some of its rivals like last year’s Vizio V-Series, but anything more than a few degrees severely degrades the fidelity of the image.
