Most of the time it was playing tunes as an all-in-one combo driving plenty of headphones, ranging from IEMs, portable over-ears, to desktop dynamic and planar-magnetic headphones. I have also used it in the living room, driving directly a power amplifier of my choice (it was either a Benchmark AHB2 or KECES S300) and a pair of KEF Reference 3 loudspeakers. Later on, I left its preamp duties to the Topping PRE90 or to a Benchmark HPA4, driving the same power amplifiers and loudspeakers. The remote control cycles through four output modes which selectively turns on the different outputs for both on. I did not have the patience to decode all four modes. But I imagine this is very useful to control different output devices using the remote, making this a rather unique multi-function device. This DAC is done absolutely right and is here to please both measurement freaks and timbre enthusiasts. With looks that can fit anywhere, the DX5 is also provided with a Bluetooth receiver capable of almost all modern protocols so it can also be used everywhere.Both devices also have an orange LCD screen, however, the XA-10’s display is more informative since the display utilizes pixels that allow it to show letters, instead of a group of 7-segment displays. As a DAC the DX5 is more reference sounding, with greater transparency and technical superiority albeit not as musical as the Aurora but from the headphone output the Aurora just plays on another level.

As said above the headphone amplifier is not balanced so you are effectively listening to one phase of the signal. Recreating a round of applause from an audience and instruments such as chimes and trumpets diffuses with great resolution and air. While it is approaching shrillness with brighter song choices, its ability to sift through top-end microdetails enables it to not sound grainy as an upside.
